Kano -> Fact File

The city of Kano is the capital of Kano State in northern Nigeria. The whole Kano region was formerly one of the original seven Hausa States, which trace their history back to AD 900. The influence of Islam is estimated to have reached the area around the 12 th and 14 th centuries. In the 19 th century, the Fulani took control over the region, remaining in power till 1903 when the British replaced them.
The city, with an estimated population of around 660,000 according to the 1995 census, consists of several distinct districts. These include the old walled city – with several houses made of clay – and the industrial area of Bompai. The major industries in the area are morocco leather, peanuts, metal ware and cotton. The city also attracts a large quantity of agricultural and farm produce from the surrounding rural areas. The Kano State Institute for Higher Education is located in the city itself.
